My title refers to one of my favorite student quotes. In a discussion of how we live in such a "small world" my German foreign exchange student, Jan, remarked, "it's a small world until you run out of gas." I thought for just a second, laughed hysterically, and considered it thoughtfully. Humans are incredibly linked through computers and cell phones, but if you run out of gas sixty miles from the nearest town and no cell phone service suddenly the world isn't so small anymore.
